With Ethan's constant want of things (all the Christmas ads and commercials aren't helping!), we decided he needed to start learning the value of money by earning an allowance. So the other day we sat down and came up with a list of 5 things that he needs to do everyday.
1. Clear the table. (He usually does this anyway, but it has been a bit messy - gotta love leftovers on the floor!)
2. Feed Willow once a day. (The leftovers on the floor don't count! ;) Willow gets fed twice a day so Emily gets to feed her the other time.)
3. Pick up his toys and room. (The other day he made Emily and Jon stop in the middle of what they were playing so he could pick it up!)
4. Help with breakfast. (This is Ethan's new favorite because he gets to climb on a chair to reach the cereal and bowls.)
5. Help Emily. (This was Ethan's category and so far it has encompassed helping Emily put a puzzle together, helping Emily put on her coat, helping Emily up when she falls.)
We created a chart for him on the computer to 'X' out the chores everyday. He is more than excited about this and has been overly helpful. Even when we were up at the cabin for Thanksgiving, he was anxious to do his chores there and as soon as we got home, he ran upstairs to X out the boxes. At the end of the week, he will earn one whole dollar to spend however he wishes. I just hope he'll realize that we aren't made of money. How many times did I hear my parents say that?!?!
