At Ethan's five-year check-up I was surprisingly informed by the nurse that he has trouble seeing out of his right eye. When she told me this, I looked at Ethan for confirmation, and his look said it all, "Yeah, duh, Mom." Totally nonchalantly, Ethan agreed with the nurse, but I was shocked. How could I not have noticed? This lead us to his first eye appointment where Ethan independently meet with the nurse and doctor. Now that he is five, he doesn't seem to need me anymore. After the doctor was finished with Ethan, he called me back to the room and informed me that Ethan is farsighted in both eyes but doubly in the right one. As a result, he has a 'lazy eye' (there is a medical term for this but I can't remember what it is called). Again, I was shocked. How could I not have noticed? The doctor proceeded to tell me that Ethan would need glasses and then vision therapy using a patch to hopefully correct and strengthen his eye. So we were off to try on frames. Ethan picked out a cute pair - bright blue, wire "Disney" frames - much better than the ones with the Transformers and Power Rangers on them. He looks like a little man.Friday, July 31, 2009
