Racing Day

As part of Carlisle's annual Summerfair, the town holds a youth track meet. Tonight I was completely entertained by my ultra-competitive son and his racing preparation. As soon as I told Ethan that he would get to compete in some races, he was thrilled - beyond thrilled, extactic and overjoyed! He immediately morphed into race mode. He changed his clothes and shoes, needing to wear his 'speedy shoes'. Then he began his pre-race warm-ups and stretching, all the while, talking himself up. He was so focused, so determined, so excited, so motivated, so ready. I am not exactly sure where that drive comes from, but it runs deep through Ethan's veins. He wants to win. He is usually a good sport, but he really really really wants to win. So all Ethan could talk and think about was winning the races. Of course, I tried to prepare him for defeat and encourage him to simply try his best, but that boy has confidence, even despite the fact that he is a bit smaller than most his friends (given the fact that he just turned 5 years old last month).
When we arrived at the track, he couldn't stop talking about racing. We had to wait in line to register and still all talk was about racing. Once we actually got up to the track, he sprinted around and I had to convince him to save some of his energy for the race itself. It was even better when a few of Ethan's closest friends showed up and they all started showing off. Ahhh, boys will be boys!
When the first race began (a 50 yard dash), I escorted Ethan to the starting line and got him into position on the track. I could tell he was anxious and focused. He didn't really want to talk, except about the race. Then as soon as the gun went off, he ran with such determination, pumping his arms, furrowing his brow, leaving it all on the track. I didn't get to see the finish, as I was still walking back from the starting line, but according to Ethan he came in 3rd place, which I consider a huge victory, given the size of the other boys. I could tell he was a little disappointed, but he was also overjoyed and having so much fun competing. I was proud of him. He tried so hard. You could see it in his face.
Ethan ran another race (a 100 yard dash) and again I didn't see the finish, but Ethan says he came in 3rd again. He left with a big purple participants' ribbon and was then ready to go play on the playground.
