The Running Skirt

I admit I own a running skirt - yes, skirt. I'll even admit that I wear it frequently. And finally, I have to admit that I love it. Real runners don't wear skirts, right? Wrong.
Originally I bought my running skirt because I thought it'd be an easy way to go from my daily activities with the kids to working out (and vice versa) without a complete wardrobe overhaul. With two young kids I don't always have time to change or shower - I know, that probably grosses people out but it's my reality. So I thought here's the perfect solution for a mom on the go. When I showed Jon the running skirt, his first reaction was "I was wondering when you were going to get one of those."
But I didn't actually wear it out the door for a while. I was a bit nervous about running in it. What would people think? How would it feel? Would I be totally self-conscious in it? Well, there was only way to find out - run!
To tell the truth, I did feel a bit self-conscious on that first run but I've grown to love the skirt. There is something very freeing about it, and something strangely empowering too. I love the way the fabric sways and my legs seem to move faster without the confinement of shorts. I simply feel better - more confident. Oh, and last admission - it's cute too.
I do wonder what people think as they see me running by in my skirt. "Is she on her way to a tennis match?" "She can't be a serious runner." "Why in the world is she running in a skirt?!" But I don't care anymore. My legs are churning, my feet striking, my arms pumping, sweat dripping, heart pounding. And I simply pass them with a swoosh of my skirt.
