Oh Christmas Tree

This year I so wanted to head out to the country, cut down our own tree, see Santa and drink hot cocoa. A true holiday experience. But with it sleeting last weekend and freezing cold this weekend, we opted out of the outdoor adventure for the warmth of our car and the convenience of the local YMCA. Even after just a few minutes of exposure to the bitter cold, both the kids were complaining about their frozen faces. Good thing we could just pick out a tree and go. Jon spied the one we eventually choose and the size and shape fit perfectly in the corner of our house.

This morning the kids and I enjoyed decorating it. I turned on the Songs of the Season channel and we opened the large box of ornaments. Emily was fascinated by all the choo-choos and "babies" in box, while Ethan searched for all of his. Every year I love looking at the ornaments because most of them have a story. The snowboarding Santa, a simple red apple, Raggedy Anne, Emily's star, the bears in the RV, a volleyball player, PacMan, the angel with Ethan's face, Willow's twin, the hand-painted columbines. There are fish, bears, mice, dogs, balls, Santas, reindeers, soliders, snowflakes, and all sorts of other characaters decorating the tree. The ornaments are random and many are broken or falling apart, but in a sense, they are a part of us, our family. All together, it's just perfect.
