I have to admit it is nice to enjoy a day off, but the significance of today isn't lost on me in the joy of not working. In having kids, I think my realization of what has changed as a result of the Civil
Rights Movement has grown. My kids are pretty clueless when it comes to race,
and I love that. We don't talk about race because it really doesn't come up. They just see people. So today I want to make sure I say thank you to Dr. King and all of those who have tried so hard to make our society a better place. Thank you for fighting for what is right, despite the fact that so many others were telling you you were wrong. I can't even imagine how challenging it would have been to live in your shoes even for just one day. Thank you for showing such tremendous strength and courage. It is amazing and inspiring. Thank you for making acceptance the norm. This morning we went out to breakfast, saw a family of three come in, each with vastly different skin color, and no one stopped to stare. I don't think my kids noticed at all. They simply smiled and waved "hi" to the cute little boy as his family sat down at the table next to us. Thank you for making our world a place where my kids only use the world
'black' to describe the color of an object. In fact, the other day my
kids had to ask if they were African-American too. And to tell you the
truth, I think they were a little disappointed when they realized they
weren't. Thank you for helping to create a world where people aren't labeled. Now, I am not saying we live in a utopia where people are completely colorblind; I'm not that naive. But my kids are, and that is something I think Dr. King would be so happy to see.
